Heritage Open Day 2016

Heritage Open Days- 2nd  Weekend in September
www.heritageopendays.org.uk

Heritage Open Days is England’s biggest heritage festival involving 40,000 volunteers.

It celebrates our fantastic history, architecture and culture; offering people the chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.

Over 3.4 million adults visited nearly 5,000 Heritage Open Days events in 2015, which was estimated to bring benefits of more than £15 million to local economies.

We  have  been involved in this  event locally for over 20 years.  A number of properties have been opened including Lytham Hall (before it was properly open as now), Edenfield, St Annes Synagogue and Lytham Police  Station.

In 2016, on 10th September 10am – 4pm we will once again be opening the following:

The Town Hall at St Annes
This  elegant “Porritt” building, built in 1896 as the Southdown Hydro Hotel opposite St Annes Pier was adapted for use as a Town Hall for the Lytham St Annes Borough Council in 1925.  There are wonderful Minton  tiles on walls and  floors, with original  stained  glass. The Lytham St Annes Art Collection is housed at the Town Hall and much of  it can be seen throughout the building.

Matlock House
Built in 1877 two years after the foundation of St Annes on the Sea, it’s where the Local Board of Health, which preceded the establishment of a Town Council, first met. The fire engine was  kept  there. A  schoolroom extension of the 1890s retains  its original tiling in excellent  condition.

We need extra stewards for these events,  If you would like to volunteer, even if it’s not for the full duration of the open day, please get in touch – thank you!
