Lytham St Annes Eco Group

About Us
We are a group of Fylde residents who share a vision that Lytham St Annes and the whole Fylde Borough can be a cleaner, greener place for people to live, work and visit.
Our aim is for Lytham St Annes to become a beacon of sustainable living, enhancing nature and lightening our footprint on the Earth.
The transition to low-carbon living is well underway as people recognise the urgency of climate breakdown. We can help to accelerate this movement by working with local people, businesses, schools, community and faith groups and Fylde Council to raise awareness and promote positive actions.
Eco Group Aims
• Benefit nature through activities focused on protecting and enhancing habitats for wildlife.
• Benefit people through activities focused on improving communal spaces, community connection, public health and quality of life.
• Benefit future generations through activities focused on greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
We welcome all local residents to join the Eco Group and you can follow us on Facebook for updates, events information and eco inspiration ‘Lytham St Annes Eco Group’.

Take Action
Everyone can play their part to make changes both big and small that the drive towards ‘net zero carbon’ requires. Here are some ideas and inspiration:
- Meat-free Mondays: If you don’t already have a vegetarian or vegan diet then could you go meat-free on Mondays? You could even suggest your workplace, school or college follows this international campaign: meatfreemondays.com
- Compost waste fruit and vegetables and peelings at home. Make sure you only add raw fruit, veg and plant material to your compost heap, along with brown materials like woody prunings and cardboard: www.rhs.org.uk/soil-composts-mulches/composting
- You can calculate your personal carbon footprint using the World Wildlife Fund’s free online calculator: footprint.wwf.org.uk
- Once you have an idea of your carbon footprint you can find plenty of inspiration about actions you can take to reduce it and aim for ‘one-planet living’, such as this guide to being a conscious consumer from Friends of the Earth.
- Switch your energy provider to a renewable tariff, this website could help: bigcleanswitch.org
- Look up options to generate renewable energy at your home: energysavingtrust.org.uk/energy-at-home/generating-renewable-electricity
- In 2009 British filmmaker Franny Armstrong made a feature film called The Age of Stupid, featuring Pete Postlethwaite as the last man on Earth in 2055. You can watch the film for free on YouTube.

Fylde Borough
The total estimated carbon footprint for Fylde Borough in 2018 was approximately 387 tonnes CO2. Census data from 2018 suggests 79,800 people live in the area, so spread across all residents, the carbon footprint equates to 4.9 tonnes CO2 per person, per year.
The average global carbon footprint per year needs to drop to under 2 tonnes by 2050 to keep climate change within manageable limits. To contribute to this global goal Fylde residents need to more than halve the CO2 they emit in daily life.
